Through the Shutter – The Art of Being Present

Most of us have hundreds, maybe even thousands, of photos saved on our phones. Yet only a handful truly make us stop. They’re the ones that instantly transport us back to a moment, a feeling, or a person. According to photographer Carina Mask, that’s because the best photographs don’t just capture what happened. They capture what it felt like.

For Carina, photography has never been simply about taking pictures. It’s about being fully present. Whether she’s photographing a nonprofit gala, creating branding images for a local business, or capturing a family milestone, she believes every person has a story worth telling, and every moment deserves to be treated with care.

That philosophy has led Carina to work alongside National and International organizations whose missions are making a real difference. From nonprofits that provide meals for those facing hunger to organizations supporting LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ seniors, and mentorship programs for young girls, her camera has become a way to help tell stories that inspire compassion, awareness, and action.

Her work extends far beyond community events. Carina creates editorial and commercial photography for magazines, newspapers, national brands, businesses, and private clients. Yet no matter who stands in front of her camera, her goal remains the same: to create images that feel honest, personal, and lasting.

That mindset was shaped by a Japanese philosophy known as Ichi Go Ichi E, the idea that every encounter happens only once and should be treasured. It’s a reminder to slow down, be fully present, and appreciate the people and moments that may never come together in exactly the same way again. That perspective has become the foundation of both her work and her life.

This August, visitors can experience Carina’s artistry in a different way as selected pieces from her collection, Etheric Matter, will be featured in Harmony & Balance: The Essence of Asian Art at the ArtsUnited Gallery in Wilton Manors. The exhibition explores themes of spirituality, transformation, and the connection between people, culture, and place. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 1, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and the exhibition will remain on display through August 29

While Carina’s fine art continues to earn recognition, she’s equally passionate about helping people and businesses tell their own stories. She offers professional photography and videography for nonprofit events, galas, corporate functions, marketing and branding content, headshots, portraits, and personal milestones. Whether she’s documenting an unforgettable event or creating visuals that help a business connect with its audience, Carina approaches every project with the same thoughtful attention and genuine care that define her artistic work.

For Carina, photography isn’t simply a profession. It’s a way of honoring moments that matter before they quietly become memories.
