Behind the Curtain
If Broadway handed out loyalty rewards, Gary Deinken would probably qualify for VIP status. A weekend trip to New York isn’t complete without catching a show or two… or six or seven. Back home, one wall is covered with Broadway magnets, each one a reminder of another unforgettable performance. It’s safe to say theater isn’t just something Gary enjoys. It’s part of who he is.
Fortunately for Wilton Manors, he brought that passion with him.
Since moving to South Florida a little more than seven years ago, Gary has embraced everything that makes our community special. You’ll find him on the softball field, at the bowling alley, or on the tennis court, but it’s his dedication to the arts that has left a lasting impression. A chance conversation on the tennis court introduced him to Slow Burn Theatre Company, where he began volunteering four years ago. Today, he serves as Treasurer and is completing his second year on the Board of Directors, helping ensure the organization can continue bringing exceptional live theater to South Florida audiences.
Gary also found another way to combine his passions through the South Florida Pride Bands, where he performs in concerts while serving as Treasurer, combining his love of music with his knack for numbers. If you happen to walk past his home, you might even hear him playing the piano, another reminder that music has always been part of his life.
Gary isn’t the loudest person in the room but after spending a few minutes talking with him, you’ll quickly discover one of the quickest wits in the community. Whether he’s balancing budgets, cheering from the audience, performing with friends, or sharing a clever remark, Gary reminds us that some of the biggest contributions to a community happen quietly, behind the curtain.
